Who in sweet muscat is Musty Osmosis?
Why, Musty Osmosis is no ordinary sommelier.
That’s right, he is the world’s foremost wine detective; a man whose towering nasal appendage grants him a superhuman ability to detect scents beyond the comprehension of us mere nasal-mortals.
With a schnozz of legendary proportions, Musty has dedicated his life to solving the greatest mysteries of the wine world, from counterfeit Grand Cru and vineyard sabotage to bulk wine recipe scandals - all with a single whiff of his mighty conk.
The Gift of the Gargantuan Hooter
Musty was born in the village of Nez-sur-Mer, a sleepy hamlet nestled between rolling vineyards and pungent cheese caves.
From the moment he entered the world, doctors marveled at his enormous beak, which required a separate christening bowl. But as Musty grew, so too did the power of his proboscis. By the age of five, he could identify every ingredient in his mother’s stew from three rooms away. By ten, he could distinguish between wines, by the vineyard row in which their grapes were grown. Even which vineyard staff had worked the vines that morn.
Legend has it that Musty’s extraordinary sense of smell comes from an ancient lineage - his great-great-grandfather was a perfumer, his great-grandmother a truffle hunter and his second-uncle-removed on his mother’s side was the only man banned from every underground blind-tasting competition in Europe for “knowing too much.”
After all, every smell has a secret…and every secret - has a smell.
How Did Musty Become Famous?
Musty's rise to fame began in dramatic fashion. At the age of 21, he was a mere cellar rat at a prestigious Bordeaux estate when, like a detective, he detected an undetectable fraud.
At an exclusive wine tasting event, a renowned critic lavishly praised a purported pre-World War II vintage, awarding it a perfect score and an outrageous string of ridiculous descriptors.
Musty approached the bottle. Taking a deep sniff, he remarked, “Curious... I detect a trace of cesium-137, indicative of post-1945 origin.”
The attendees were skeptical, but Musty's acute sense of smell had uncovered a crucial detail. The presence of cesium-137 - a byproduct of nuclear fission from atomic bomb tests conducted after 1945 - served as a marker for post-war wines. This isotope is absent in wines produced before the advent of nuclear testing.
Further scientific analysis confirmed Musty's suspicion: the wine contained detectable levels of cesium-137, proving it was from a later vintage than claimed. This revelation exposed the forgery, leading to a scandal that rocked the wine community.
Musty's unparalleled ability to detect such nuances solidified his reputation as “the man with the nose that knows,” highlighting his unique role in preserving the integrity of the wine industry.
From there, the reputation of his Pooter grew…
He was called to solve the Case of the Vanishing Vintage, where an entire barrel of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti mysteriously vanished - in fact, Musty caught the culprit; the meddlesome magician, Marlene Macroix!
Before long, he was known worldwide as a wine investigator, problem-solver, and eccentric genius, his massive gas-pipe appearing on book covers - to be accurate, it was actually on book covers and back covers.
Musty even fought the famous Champagne duel - sabering the cork with his nose horn.
What Can He Smell?
Musty’s nasal superpowers go far beyond mere Sommellerie.
With his Hyper-Olfactory Cognition, he can smell a corked bottle from three blocks away. He detects the soil type of a vineyard by sniffing a wine glass.
He can identify the vineyard workers that had garlic for lunch. Pinpoint the exact hour of a wine’s fermentation process just from the scent of the lees.
He can smell deceit - literally. He can tell when someone is lying by the stress-induced pheromones they release. Even self-deceit and after confronting himself; self-denial.
His snout is so powerful that he cannot ride public transport, as he instantly knows what everyone had for breakfast, what soap they use and what emotional baggage they are carrying based on their scent aura.
So, if you have a bouquet or smell related mystery to solve, especially if it is related to wines, wineries and vineyards - and you can find him - you can call
